GARY COOK IN HALL OF FAME PDF Print E-mail
A much deserved honour is being bestowed upon a legendary local hockey icon as former Fort William North Stars General Manager, the late Gary Cook, will be enshrined into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in the Builder's Category.
 
Cook, who passed away in January of this year following a lengthy battle with cancer, will be recognized at the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner on Saturday September 27th, 2008 in Thunder Bay. He will honoured for his years of service in the hockey ranks at many levels from junior, senior and professional hockey where he guided multiple teams to league and national championships.

Among the players who are Fort William North Stars property that will be heading to the Ontario Hockey League training camp next week are forwards Michael MacDonald and Cody Fraser. MacDonald is off to the London Knights camp while Fraser will be heading to Sudbury for the Wolves main skate.

The Fort William North Stars will have another familiar face back in it's line-up this season  having re-signed defenceman Mike Salter. The 20-year old Chase, BC product picked up 15 points in 25 games while registering 85 penalty minutes after being acquired by the club mid-way through last season.
 
A couple of other additions by the club have seen the North Stars acquire the Hockey Canada playing rights of forward Brent Wesley and defneceman Jory Spring for future considerations. Wesley, 19 hails from Constance Lake On and had been with the Abitibi Eskimos of the Northern Ontario Jr Hockey League including playing for that team in Dudley-Hewitt Cup two years ago. 
 
In 14 games with Abitibi last season, he scored twice and added nice assists for 11 points to go along with 12 penalty minutes. Spring, a stay at home blueliner who is also 19, who returns home to Thunder Bay after skating for the Athens Aeros Eastern ontario Jr Hockey League in 2007-08. He spent two seasons with the Thunder Bay AAA Kings Major Midgeets prior to that.
 
In three other roster moves, the Stars have transferred the playing rights of Justin Longley to the Neepawa Natives of the Manitoba Jr Hockey League, Marcus Perrier to the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League and Darren Cizmar to Thunder Bay Bearcats of the SIJHL. All three were move for future considerations. Longley and Perrior both had 12 points in 31 and 47 games respectively while Cizmar recorded 27 points in 49 contests.
 
STARS SOLIDIFY 'TENDING PDF Print E-mail
With training camp set to get underway Monday August 25th, the Fort William North Stars have bolstered their goaltending for the upcoming SIJHL season with the signing of a pair of netminders. The club has acquired 20-year old goaltender Patrick Sullivan from the Hamilton Red Wings of the Ontario Provincial Jr Hockey League for future considerations while also signing Thunder Bay native Michael Mitchell who spent last season with the local AAA Midget Kings side. Sullivan, a six-foot, 195-pound native of Surrey, B.C., posted a 7-4-0 mark with Hamilton in 2007-08 with a 3.52 goals-against average and an .894 save percentage. He also picked up one shutout. Mitchell, 17, meanwhile had a 28-8-2 record with the Kings with a 1.82 GAA and a .919 save mark to go along with 12 shutouts.

NORTH STAR NOTES PDF Print E-mail

The eighth season of the SIJHL kicks off Sept. 19 as Fort William travels to Dryden for the first of two games against the defending league title holder Ice Dogs at Memorial Arena. The two sides will also meet again the following evening back in Dryden to wrap-up the weekend in a re-match of last season’s Bill Salonen Cup final.

 

Among the 50 regular season games will be the club’s first-ever visits to Sioux Lookout for games against the expansion Flyers who begin their first season in the SIJHL.

 

Also on tap will be a pair of neutral site encounters for the club. The Stars will take on the Schreiber Diesels Nov. 19 in Nipigon as well as Jan. 31 in Marathon.

 

HOME OPENER: After starting the season with five consecutive road games the North Stars will commence the home portion of their schedule Wednesday, Oct. 1 as they host the rival Thunder Bay Bearcats in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Fort William Gardens.

08-09 NS EXHIBITION GAMES PDF Print E-mail

The Fort William North Stars have three road exhibition games on their slate this preseason.

 

On September 5 the club will travel to Fort Frances for an encounter with the second-year Jr. Sabres in a 7:30 p.m. CST start at Ice For Kids Arena.

 

From there the team heads to Portage la Prairie, Man., for a two-game set September 6-7 against the defending Manitoba Jr. Hockey League champion Portage Terriers.

 

Both games are currently slated to get underway at 7:30 p.m. CST.
